Old Pictures, Another Story

It is Dallin's first birthday, September 1976. We were at my mother's house in Emmett. One of Dallin's presents was a green ball. Though he is interested in the ball, his big sister wants it!

Standing to the left of Dallin is my youngest brother Curt, age 12. I am holding the ball, and I believe I am explaining to Erlynne that it isn't "her" ball, but for her little brothers, but she can play with it and share.
The older woman to my left is my Grandmother Fox, who had come to visit my mother for a few weeks. They were both widows, with the mother coming from Utah to get to know her daughter better. Instead she ended up listening to two great grandchildren, Erlynne and Dallin.

A little closer view of me and Dallin, eating his birthday cake. If you look close enough, you can see that Grandmother Fox looks much like my mother does today at age 87. Grandmother Fox is 86 years old in this photo.






His first birthday, his little cake with a candle. Notice the filled canning jars of pears behind him? We had driven to Emmett from Provo, Utah, after leaving Steve at the airport to fly to New York City for a meeting with LRC, Language Research Center, a project he was working on at BYU after his graduation with his BA. I drove with the two children in our Chevrolet Impala to Emmett, canned fruit for five days, loaded up the cases of fruit and drove back to the SLC airport to pick Steve up. We had just barely pulled up to the front door where passengers drop off or get picked up and Steve walked out. Excellent timing!

There is more to this story for Steve: he was going to change flights and come back sooner, but it would have meant a layover in Chicago, and getting into SLC a different time than I was planning to pick him up. So he stayed with his original flight. The flight he didn't book took off from JFK, was hijacked to Paris, France, the plane sat on the tarmac for many hours, negotiations were made with the hijackers, the hijackers got off the plane, they refueled the plane and flew back to JFK. The passengers never got off the plane. Steve was secretly sad he didn't get to fly to France!
