Gardening Advice - Today

Our project: remove all the iris from the front flower section, to thin and separate most of the iris. Dallin arrived at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday morning, and between Steve, Dallin, and I, we removed six buckets of iris. This is before we stared - the rock is removed, the iris are clipped.
We took a break at noon for lunch and these pictures are the "during." Note the tan-ish colored particles on the soil. It is the old, and I mean old, TVP that was given to me back in 1980, and the only thing soy is good for is in the soil. We added it to the top as well as five buckets of compost. Clark - do you remember back in 1995 when you and a friend from TAMS helped make this original garden spot with the stinky compost?

These last two shots are the "after." We planted the black rim, reset the white rocks at the edges, and replanted the periwinkles. The iris and other bulbs will be replanted next week when Dallin can come again, as well as bring his baby dutch iris to add to the beauty. The tan rocks are from the Mathis' next door. They gave them to us when they got their new fence.

This is always such hard, sweaty, hot work, but so worth it. My advice: when you are changing your flower garden, many hands make fast and light work. Thanks, Steve and Dallin for your blood, sweat, and tears! (which was really just sweat pouring off their faces) They are awesome.
